I have been researching my camera upgrades for some time and made my purchase decisions last week. I placed my order from Amazon.com
on Friday and the first boxes arrived today. So I quickly rushed home and decided to do some quick field tests.
This shot was taken with my new Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM lens. These horses are about 300 yards away from my house.
This shot was a perfect chance to test the Image Stabilization since the sun was just starting to set and I was loosing my light. The shot was taken at 400mm at F/5.6 with an exposure of 1/200 sec. and ISO100. With my Canon 300D and a sensor crop factor of 1.6 I had an effective focal length of 640mm.
Common practice is that you should always shoot an exposure greater than your focal length. So for this shot I should have been shooting over 1/640 sec. But the IS kicks in and gave me some nice control of the image sharpness at this slow of a shutter speed.
