Woman in Black and White

woman2.jpg

I feel the black and white versions are much better. The blue sky in the color versions are just a distraction.

Burghers of Calais

burghers.jpg

One of my favorite sculptors is Auguste Rodin. This is the "Burghers of Calais." Michele and I saw a copy of this same sculpture in London many years ago.

I first learned of Rodin at a class I took in college. We visited the Norton Simon museum in Pasadena and they had an extensive collection of his work.

Rodin has a amazing ability to show emotion and anguish in his work.

Warrior

I'm always amazed that an artist has the ability to capture motion so well in a sculpture. Click the link below to see more photos of this subject.

Child Sculpture

child.jpg

I have always had a facination with sculpture and modern art. That is one reason why I really love the Hirshorn Musuem and Sculpture garden. This was my fifth visit to the Hirshorn, but the first time with a camera.

Crystal Structure

crystal.jpg

This was an interesting 3D dipiction representing how crystals are built. The 3D effect is lost in this photo, but I still liked the "pretty colors."

Natural Sculpture

sandstone.jpg

One reason why we went to the Naturual History musuem was to see the Harry Winston gem collection. Laura wanted to see the Hope Diamond (and all the other jewels.)

This photo depicts how a geological process can create its own version of art out of sandstone.

Frozen in Time

frozen.jpg

I have a ton of photos to post, hopefully you don't get too bored with the subject matter :-)

I like the effect I was able to get with this one. I set up the shot with a longer exposure and steadied myself against a post to get this shot. If I had a tripod, I would have tried a longer exposure to show more movement of the people. I'm still happy with this result.

Smithsonian Visit

smithwindows.jpg

Laura visited us from California this week. We headed to DC to see the sites. We visited the Smithsonian natural history museum and the Hirshorn.

The photo above was taken from our first stop at the musuem. While waiting at the restrooms I looked up and took this shot.

Built for Speed

2004snow2.jpg

Here is another picture I took from last Winter. The weather around here is starting to warm up and I'm looking forward to Spring.

The Long Walk

2004snow.jpg

This Winter we only had one good snow fall. I tried to take some pictures to post, but nothing really caught my eye. This picture was taken last year.

Nightime Snow

nightimesnow.jpg

A couple of weeks ago we had a little snow. I took this opportunity to try some long nighttime exposures. There is definitely an art to nighttime photography (an art I haven't gotten the hang of yet.)

I took about 20 pictures and this is the only one that was interesting enough to post.

Some details of this shot:
Taken at 6:25PM and it was pitch dark.
Shutter speed: 25 seconds
Lens Aperture: F/4
ISO Speed: ISO-100

One interesting aspect about nighttime pictures is that even though it is pitch dark, there is typically enough ambient light to take pictures. You just have to have really long exposure times, and a subject that will sit still.

Black and White: Emma #3

Here is the last photo of my Black & White Library series. I will try to post a picture of the final result sometime soon. Michele and I are very pleased with the end result.

Black and White: HB Pier #2

bw_hbpier2.jpg

One of these day's I need to calibrate my LCD monitor at home (and also at work.) I'm happy with the recent output I received on my real-world prints. But they show up on the display a little darker than what I actually received in real life. Also when I look at them the grey tones are little warmer as well, compared to a bluer-grey on my LCD panel. That makes the prints look much better than what I see on my monitor, which is a good thing. I know the output can never be exactly WYSIWYG. But I still think I should take the time to try and calibrate my monitor and research the various tips my photo sites recommend.

If you know of some good calibration tips and links, feel free to leave a comment below.

Black and White: Emma #2

bw_emma2.jpg

The 12x12 prints arrived in the mail yesterday and I was very happy with the results. I would highly recommend EzPrints. The website doesn't really compare to the quality of oFoto.com, but the output for large prints is great. I will probably still use oFoto.com for the standard 4x6, and 5x7 prints. But anything bigger than that will be going to ezprints. I'm already thinking of reprinting some of this series again so I can have a set at work.

Black and White: HB Pier

bw_hbpier1.jpg

When Emma and I went to the pier to take photos, it was an overcast day, with temporary periods of bright sun streaking through the clouds. That made it very difficult to get some quality photographs. This photo looks terrible in living color. But when I converted it to Black and White it became one of my favorites of the day.

On another note, see that little Comments (0) link down below. Well as you can see, all of the posts have a little (0) next to them. That means your not posting comments. So if you like the photo, like the new home page design, if you hate everything, PLEASE leave me a comment. :-)

Black and Whites (and redesign)

bw_emma1.jpg

As you can see I made a slight redesign. I have been meaning to change the format for a while. I'm not completely finished, but going to a single full size picture on the home page is what I wanted to accomplish.

This is one of five recent pictures I took while in California. I posted the color version of this one recently. In our library I have 5 empty frames hung above our book shelves. Each frame will hold a 12x12 picture. Michele had the idea to do a series of photos that I took at the pier. Here is the first photo from that series. I ordered prints of these photos online at ezprints (they do large size outputs.) This is my first test of this service. I'm curious how they compare to oFoto which has good quality, but only does typical sized prints. I will let you know how they come out when they arrive in the mail.
