Miyazaki

I would expect to see a creature similar to this in a Miyazaki film.

Black and White Study

As I mentioned yesterday, I just finished reading the Tao of Photography which got me in the mood to go out and take pictures. I went to Rachel Carson trail on Tuesday with no goals or preconceived notions. When I was there I ended up not looking at color and just started noticing the light. As I was shooting, I ended up visualizing all the photos in Black and White.

I recently received the August issue of Outdoor Photographer and it had a great article on Black and White conversions. I have also been reading the Black and White Digital Photography website recently and I think I was subconsciously thinking about everything in tones of grey and luminescence rather than color.

So for the next couple of days I will be posting my black and white study photos. Feel free to leave a comment if something comes to mind about any of the photos.

Taoism

I just finished reading the Tao of Photography by Philippe L. Gross. It is an excellent book to get your head in the right place to take pictures. There is no talk of technique or equipment. It discusses what happens in the mind of great photographers. There is a great deal of psychology and also spiritualism that took myself a bit a time to wrap my head around. The one take away that I took to heart on a recent trip was to go without a goal and to just be there for the experience. It allowed me to open my mind and eyes to see the little photographic opportunities that are all around you. I highly recommend the book and I get the distinct feeling that every reading of the book will bring something into sharper focus, pun intended.

You can pickup your copy of the book at Amazon.com

Toothy

Once a month I attend a meeting for the FONZ photo club at the National Zoo. I take that opportunity to arrive early at the zoo to take pictures. I also try to concentrate on one animal during my visits. Today I spent most of my time with the prairie dogs.

Fireworks

This year I took Digital Photo School's advice and shot entirely in manual mode and got some very good results. I will not bore you with all of the fireworks photos so here is just one for this year.

Emma's Art

This weekend I finally got around to a project I have wanted to finish for sometime. My daughter Emma creates a large amount of artwork (both at school and home.) There is only so much artwork you can reasonably display in the house so I try to either take pictures or scan all of her work so that we can have a digital image for our files. An added bonus is that we are frequently able to incorporate her artwork into other media. For example, if we need a birthday or get well card, I can take one of her images and print them out as a photo card or onto precut card stock. All of the artwork is also stored in my online photo gallery and is always available to view when the mood strikes us. Emma also takes the images she likes best and posts them on her own website.

Now that this past years work has been recorded we can now store it away in our basement.
