Eagle in Tree

Just as I was driving away to head for home, I noticed this adult in a tree near the parking lot. So I got back out of the car and took a few more shots before I headed home.

Fish for Lunch

A bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) primarily eats fish. It will also take small birds and ducks if necessary. Full grown adult eagles can carry up to 4 pounds.

Cleaning Up

This is the same bald eagle from yesterday's photo. After she finished her fish, she cleaned her beak by rubbing it on the branch.
This eagle was about 30 feet from where I stood taking this picture. You don't realize how big these birds are until you see them close up. This bird is about 2 feet tall and has a wing span of about 4-5 feet.

Bald Eagle Fishing
Press the play button above to view a quicktime movie (1.4mb) of this Bald Eagle fishing.
I went to Conowingo Dam on the recommendation of Jon. He has been coming to this location for the past couple of weeks to take photos of bald eagles. Today I counted at least 20 bald eagles in this one little area. Some of the other photographers said they counted over 80 last weekend.
I had some serious lens envy as some of the other photographers had 500mm and 600mm lenses for these eagles. I will be posting several shots I'm proud of over the next couple of days.

Two Young Bucks

As I drove into Black Hills park on Sunday I saw these two bucks butting each other on the side of the road. They decided to give me a look before they ran off into the forest.
