Gray days mean black & white

The unprocessed image taken in color

I visited a local winery on Kent Island with the Kent Island Photo Club. This was our first visit to the Love Point Winery. The day was overcast and and I knew I was not going to get colorful shots by the water. With this in mind I started to photograph knowing I would process these photos as black and white. This is a mental shift that gets your mind set looking towards contrast and structure. When you are photographing in color, the color itself can tell you a story. The color could be the key feature. In black and white you are telling a different story.

When you remove the color, the focus of the image shifts to the compositional elements. You start to look at the tone, texture, and light in the image to tell the story.

I will need to visit the winery later this year when the grapes are harvested. This should provide another chance to tell a different story.
