Heroes on the Water
Harness the Healing Power of Nature with Heroes on the Water
Paddle. Fish. Heal
Kayak trailer: they had over a dozen kayaks in this trailer for the participants.
Last year I started looking at kayaks with the dual purpose of fishing and photographing from the kayak. The idea of doing both from a kayak (vs a boat) was appealing to me since you are much closer to the water. A kayak is also much easier to store, transport, and launch on the water.
There was a local non-profit group that was advertising their used kayaks and I took the opportunity to buy one from them. I talked with one of the chapter leaders and learned about the mission of Heroes on the Water.
They provide free outdoor programs for U.S. active-duty military, veterans, law enforcement officers, first responders and their families. He invited me to attend one of their future event as a volunteer. I also offered to photograph the event.
Here is a quick synopsis of the program from their website.
Heroes on the Water is a non-profit group and there are a couple of chapters in Maryland. Heroes on the Water prioritizes the wellness of veterans, first responders and their families. The kayak fishing programs aim to address issues of transition from active duty to civilian life, creating a supportive environment where participants can engage with peers who understand their experiences.
Their initiatives are more than just fishing events; they are an opportunity for veterans and first responders to reconnect with themselves and the world around them. The peaceful rhythm of the kayak, the bond with nature, and the focus required in fishing bring a calming balance, reducing stress and promoting cognitive healing.
I have several photographic goals for this year. One of them is to use my kayak for photography. The other is to make more use of my drone for video and photography. This event was my first real test of photography from the kayak. I primarily used my 70-200mm lens while in the kayak. I was also able to make good use of the drone for this event as well.
I have learned some good lessons on using the drone and photography from a kayak. Here is a selection of photos from this event.
